St. Andrew’s calls The Reverend Richard C. Weyls as our next Rector
The Reverend Richard C. Weyls officially joined St. Andrew’s on March 15. The Transition Team has scheduled small, informal events to meet Fr. Rich mid-day on April 23 and 24; in the morning May 1; and in the evening May 1, 3, 22, 24 and 31. To RSVP sign up in the Parish Hall. Children in 1st-5th grade can meet him at a special chapel on April 30.
Father Rich is loving, caring, and pastoral in outlook; a true disciple of Christ. He expressed to the Search Committee that his first job as Rector would be to love us and care for us. His second job is to help us to create and then live into our vision for St. Andrew’s. He is both intentional and brings joyful energy to interactions. Much of his work has been interfaith, designed to create conversation with diverse ages, religions and peoples.
Father Rich was ordained into the Roman Catholic Church in 1993 in Ohio and has provided pastoral leadership and spiritual guidance to five congregations of various size, demographic constitution and location. Each parish experienced growth in membership, programming and outreach during his tenure. He has particular gifts with those experiencing poverty, addiction, mental illness and marginalization. He also delivers powerful and moving sermons using examples of pain and healing from his own life.
Father Rich took a discernment sabbatical in 2009 and decided at that time to leave parish ministry. He and his partner, Mark, moved to Seattle and began attending St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. For the past seven years, Father Rich has been serving as chaplain and Manager for Palliative Care Services for the Swedish Health System. In this position he has honed his skills as pastoral counselor and leader and administrator. He was received into the Episcopal Church and endorsed for the specialized ministry of chaplaincy in 2010. In 2014 he was received as a priest into the Episcopal Church by Bishop Rickel. He has served as a non-stipendiary Priest Associate of St. Mark’s Episcopal Cathedral, is a speaker for the Planned Giving Ministry and a faculty member for the Community of Hope.
Father Rich and his partner Mark Magee have recently purchased a home in Lynnwood and gotten engaged. They intend to marry in a small ceremony at St. Mark’s Cathedral in August. They have 3 children and 4 grandchildren.
The Vestry thanks the Search Committee for their diligent, prayerful and outstanding service. We all look forward to welcoming Father Rich in March.
